Youth Rugby in Yangon, made a try! Centaurs Rugby Rangoon is a fact.

Yangon Myanmar. Today, Centaurs Rugby Rangoon announced that youth rugby for all is now a fact in Yangon. After a trial period of two and a half months, the training of kids from six up to fifteen years of age now is a reality.

The initial idea started in May 2021 after schools reverted back to online learning and an exodus of families leaving Yangon. Kids from families in Yangon spent too much time at home, without outdoor activities and some felt lonesome with many friends suddenly gone.

Having been a parent-coach himself for his son’s rugby team of Centaurs in Singapore, Wilfred Boerrigter decided to start rugby training for kids in Yangon and with great success.

He explains his drive to continue “To see the big smiles on the kids faces after a training, and the fact that they keep bringing new friends to join, is a sure sign of the rugby potential in Yangon”.

From the start he has received a lot of support from parents and players from the adult team the Yangon Dragons, helping him with coaching and providing the materials necessary for training.

After the Summer holiday, and with the help of Wilfred’s  former rugby club Centaurs, Yangon now has its own Youth Rugby Club, brought together under the name Centaurs Rugby Rangoon. Eager to test their skills against their sister clubs in Singapore and Saigon next year, the kids are training hard every Saturday from 8.30 to 10 am.

The aim of Centaurs is to provide rugby for all in a family setting for boys and girls aged six to fifteen (training from 8.30 am to 10.00 am followed by social touch for all ages from 10.15 am to 11.30 am. The slogan of Centaurs is: Have Fun, Play Fair, Support your Mates,….  Go Centaurs.
